Some 343 first responders have now died of 9/11-related ailments, equal to the number lost on the day of the terrorist attacks on New York City, the city’s fire department has announced.

The World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon were both hit by hijacked passenger aircraft during the four coordinated terror strikes carried out by al-Qaeda against the US. Despite the fact that everyone on board perished, the fourth target, in Washington, DC, was missed owing to a passenger uprising.

Following the attacks on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a total of 2,996 people died and over 6,000 more suffered injuries.
